What it is about
The German Democratic Republic (GDR; in German: DDR) also brought in workers from abroad. For this purpose, it concluded agreements with other socialist states in Europe, Asia and Africa to which it was politically linked. These people were called contract workers. They often lived in hostels of their own and had little contact with the rest of the population. After reunification, many lost their jobs and returned to their home countries; others stayed.
