Hamburg's coat of arms shows a castle with three towers. Today the castle is white on a red ground. It used to be the other way round: the castle was red and the ground white. The present colour scheme goes back to a resolution of the Senate (Senat) of 14 May 1752.

The castle has three towers and a gate. These are the features by which you recognise the coat of arms.
