You recognise the state coat of arms of Saxony-Anhalt (Sachsen-Anhalt) by its divided shield. The upper part is striped in gold and black. In the lower field a black bear walks along a red crenellated wall with an open gate.

The coat of arms draws on two older coats of arms: that of the Prussian Province of Saxony and that of the Free State of Anhalt. The state flag, by contrast, has no images. It consists of two horizontal stripes in the state colours yellow and black.

So you recognise the bear on the red wall as the symbol of Saxony-Anhalt.

A district (Landkreis) is an association of municipalities. Saxony-Anhalt (Sachsen-Anhalt) is divided into districts and independent cities. The three independent cities are Magdeburg, Halle (Saale) and Dessau-Roßlau.

The Börde district is one of these districts. Its name comes from the Börde, a fertile, flat landscape.

The state parliament (Landtag) is the parliament of Saxony-Anhalt (Sachsen-Anhalt). It is the elected representation of the people and passes the state laws and the budget. It also elects the Minister-President (Ministerpräsident), as set out in Article 41(1) of the state constitution.

The state parliament is elected for five years (Article 43). The new election takes place no earlier than the 57th and no later than the 59th month after the start of the legislative term. If the legislative term ends early, a new election must be held within 60 days.

In local elections in Saxony-Anhalt (Sachsen-Anhalt), you can vote from the age of 16. The requirements are German citizenship or that of an EU state, and residence for at least three months in the district or municipality. This rule applies to the election of the district council (Kreistag). It applies equally to the municipal council (Gemeinderat).

You can only be elected there from the age of 18. For the election to the state parliament (Landtag), too, the limit is 18 (Article 42(2) of the state constitution).

The state colours of Saxony-Anhalt (Sachsen-Anhalt) are yellow and black. This is set out in Article 1(2) of the state constitution. The details of coats of arms, flags and seals are regulated by law.

The state flag consists of two horizontal stripes of equal width, one yellow and one black. In the state coat of arms, the upper part has gold above black. In the flag, the gold is replaced by yellow.
